The North Portland Multimedia Training Center (NPMTC) is housed at The Skanner Newsgroup’s North Portland offices. The Skanner Newsgroup partners with The Skanner Foundation to support NPMTC.
The center was conceived to address the lack of access to video equipment and training opportunities in North and Northeast Portland neighborhoods and helps balance the disparities found in every African American community in the United States.
NPMTC follows Portland Community Media’s model and extends PCM’s outreach efforts to the community by providing free training, editing labs, and workshops. The center’s founders hope that technology training can increase a participants’ earning potential, provide a voice for North and Northeast Portland and instill a sense of unity within the community.
All aspects of digital production is taught, from production planning to screening the final work. Trainees are also taught journalistic principles and oral history interview techniques to help structure their productions.
Videos submitted in 2013 to the Vanport Oral History Film Festival Contest can be viewed at NPMTC.com as well as on PCM and community access TV channels throughout the area at schedule times. See our calendar for October air dates.
